Grundfos and CII collaborate to restore a Chennai lake
Chennai, July 11, 2018: Grundfos India, one of the leading manufacturers of intelligent and energy efficient pumps and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) along with Bala Vikasa, an NGO have worked on conserving and restoring a local water body, Gangai Amman Kullam in Chennai. The fully restored lake was inaugurated on July 11, 2018 in the presence of Mr. M Govinda Rao IAS, Deputy Commissioner (Works), Greater Chennai Corporation and Dr. D Karthikeyan IAS, Commissioner, Greater Chennai Corporation, Government of Tamil Nadu. This is the first project completed under CII’s flagship initiative “CII-SR Water Alliance”.
Historically in India, water bodies such as ponds and lakes have always played an important role in conserving water for meeting various needs such as drinking water,
domestic uses, irrigation and cultural activities of the communities. Healthy lakes and their shores not only provide several environmental benefits but they influence the communities’ quality of life. However, over the last few decades, people have ignored these water bodies, leading to large scale depletion, pollution and encroachments of most of these water resources. This has had a huge impact like, water scarcity or floods thus impacting the quality of life of the citizens.
The Gangai Amman Koil Kulam, is a temple pond that caters to over a 1000 people in the community located off of the ECR Road. This restoration initiative included, cleaning the lake’s floor bed, construction of the filter bed inlet and outlet, creating an easy access to the lake, strengthening of the bund, fencing and plantation around the waterbody. Through this project, the community will experience thriving flora and improvement in community health.
Commenting on this initiative, Mr Ranganath N. K., Managing Director, Grundfos India said, “Water is at the core of what Grundfos does. We clearly understand that this precious resource needs to be conserved. This initiative is an effort from our end not only to restore water bodies in the city but also create stronger awareness for water conservation. We at Grundfos India are happy to have partnered CII and Bala Vikasa on such an initiative to create a cleaner and greener planet. Such collaborative efforts are critical in today’s world to make any kind of a significant impact.”
Mr Ravi Sam, Chairman, CSR/AA/Sustainability Sub-Committee, CII-SR, CII also added “As a member driven organization we choose and act by recommending conscious business practices to the industries for creating impact and contributing to the sustainable growth of our society. This initiative on restoration and conservation of waterbody, ‘CII SR Water Alliance’ is a flagship project conceptualized in partnership with the Government. We have got approval for rejuvenating 31 waterbodies and this particular project that we have partnered with Grundfos and Bala Vikasa is the first amongst it to be completed and handed over. We have showcased that with the right partners, mindset and commitment, we can bring back Chennai’s water bodies to life. CII hopes to take this initiative forward with Grundfos and other like-minded corporates for more number of waterbodies.”
Mr Shoury Singareddy, Executive Director, Bala Vikasa said “Balavikasa having the experience of renovating 750 irrigation water bodies across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are happy that this partnership with Grundfos and CII to restore this lake is going beyond just restoring it. Grundfos strongly urged us to set up a long-term plan to maintain this lake going forward. Therefore, we have also set up a working committee that includes Bala Vikasa, Grundfos, CII and members from the local community to oversee this maintenance. This we feel is a truly sustainable and collaborative effort.”
