Auroville Universal Township in the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu
Grundfos IndiaDownload (pdf)
In the late 60’s a group of people dreamed of creating a place “that no nation can claim as its sole property, a place where all human beings of good will, sincere in their aspirations can live freely as citizens of the world.” In the early 70’s a dozen pioneers realised this Utopian dream and created Auroville Universal Township in the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu, which currently counts a population of 1800 representing more than 30 nationalities.
Arising from Auroville’s adherence to principles of collective and harmonious living, renewable energy development and implementation has come to feature strongly in the community. As a result there are several local enterprises with over 50 years of renewable energy expertise between them, which they apply within the community and “export” beyond. Among those is AURORE (Auroville Renewable Energy), which has developed a special expertise in solar water pumping systems, installing more than 1000 of these systems throughout India.
The majority of the clients in Auroville wish to be independent of outside electricity supply, and rely on renewable energy solution for a supply of drinking water as well as water for irrigation.
What’s more, Auroville is an international role model of future energy savings and the community serves as a vast demonstration site for the application of renewable energy technologies. Therefore, most of the customers were already equipped with solar panels, but required reliable and low maintenance pump systems, compatible with the locally manufactured solar panels.
The Grundfos Solution
In accord with Auroville’s aspiration to utilise renewable energy, AURORE has so far installed 6 complete Grundfos SQFlex Solar systems and more than 50 solar submersible pumps.
The Grundfos SQFlex is not only an innovative and state-of-the-art solution, the submersible solar pumps are also completely compatible with locally manufactured solar panels and track racks. The flexibility of the SQFlex therefore enabled the customers to reuse their existing solar panels without having to modify their installations.
However, the solar pumps do not rule out the possibility of a grid connection. If the need for an outside power supply should ever occur the pumps are equipped to run on a grid connection too. At Grundfos, we think ahead and leave all possibilities open.
The primary goal for the people of Auroville is to remain independent of any outside electricity supply and the Grundfos solutions have proven to be exactly that. They are a reliable and low maintenance alternative to an outside electricity supply.
But to the people of Auroville, Grundfos is much more than a supplier of high-quality pumps. At Grundfos we focus on being responsible, thinking ahead, and innovation – also in our determined research and development towards renewable energy and more energy-efficient solutions – which seem to go hand in hand with the values of the Auroville charter: “Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations”.
“You have a really fantastic product” says Jos van den Akker a solar engineer for AURORE. He is very pleased with the reliable SQFlex solutions and service provided by the Grundfos service centre in Chennai. AURORE is promoting the Grundfos SQFlex throughout India, because of it unique possibility to pump on both solar, wind and grid-electricity, which is unmatched by anything else so far.
